The Public Policy & Task Force Committee of LA Association of Nurse Practitioner offers the following guidance to Nurse Practitioners in regard to acceptance of samples. When signing for samples from pharmaceutical companies, providing your AP number and/or prescriptive Identification number is acceptable. There is NO need to provide a copy of your license. Inform the pharmaceutical company that verification can be made through the Louisiana State Board of Nursing website if necessary. If a pharmaceutical company states, you, as a Nurse Practitioner cannot sign for the samples independent of your collaborating physician, notify a member of the Task Force Committee (lanp.org). This committee will send a letter to the pharmaceutical company for Nurse Practitioner inclusion. IN LOUISIANAAdvanced Practice Nursing is governed by law, the Nurse Practice Act, Revised Statutes and Rules & Regulations. Certain other laws and regulations that intersect our practice also impact what APRNs can do, such as laws regarding controlled substance and other industries/entity regulations that direct who may provide care, e.g., Louisiana Medicaid. Changes in the law take an act of the Louisiana Legislature to pass both houses and get signed by the Governor in order for changes to take place. Rules & Regulations are written by the professional body, in the APRN's case, the Board of Nursing. Changes in rules and regulations can be brought about through a recognition by the Board of better practice patterns. The process requires input from the public which takes time. The final authority in changing the Rules & Regulations is the Board.
